Sudan’s Militia War and the Battle for Truth: A new Interview Series

Following last year’s three-part interview with New York-based Hudson Mohawk Magazine Radio on the war in Sudan, a follow-up conversation was held with Khalid Sidahmed of the MENA Solidarity Editorial Board. This latest two-part interview explores the disinformation and distortion that have obscured public understanding of the devastating conflict between Sudan’s two main militias—the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

As the war continues with horrifying consequences for civilians, Sidahmed underscores the urgent need for critical media literacy and international solidarity. This interview equips listeners with tools to dissect media narratives, challenge myths, and stand with the Sudanese people resisting both military factions.

First Interview Recap – “Reporting on Sudan War from Various Media Outlets”

In this segment, Sidahmed examined key moments in the war and how they were portrayed in the media. One example was the widely circulated claim that the SAF had militarily “recaptured” Khartoum—a narrative promoted by pro-army sources but contradicted by reports confirming that the RSF withdrew as part of a separate deal, not due to military defeat.

The interview also revisited the horrific April 11, 2025 RSF attack on the ZamZam camp, placing it within a broader context that had been neglected in many media reports—such as prior provocations and strategic calculations by the SAF and RSF.

Finally, Sidahmed pushed back against the widespread myth that the SAF, unlike the RSF, are somehow protectors of the Sudanese people. He explained that both forces are militias responsible for mass murder and grave human rights abuses, with no democratic or progressive role to play in Sudan’s future.

Second Interview Recap – “Critically Evaluating Media Reporting on Sudan to Stay Well-Informed”

This follow-up focused on how listeners can critically assess media coverage of the war and navigate conflicting reports. Sidahmed outlined key elements of responsible and accurate journalism on Sudan—emphasising the importance of including the voices of Sudanese civil society, trade unions, resistance committees, and displaced communities.

He responded to questions about conflicting accounts—such as the true nature of the RSF’s withdrawal from Khartoum—and advised listeners on how to interrogate sources, recognise spin, and identify useful versus harmful narratives.

Sidahmed also recommended a handful of independent Sudanese media outlets and international solidarity platforms that consistently report with integrity and from a grassroots perspective. These included Sudanese women’s and workers’ organisations, as well as platforms amplifying the people’s revolution.

The interview concluded with a call to action. Sidahmed stressed that accurate information should lead to action. He encouraged listeners to turn accurate information into organising—building pressure from below to end arms sales, support Sudanese revolutionary voices and organisations, and challenge governments backing the warring militias.

These interviews are a vital contribution to the ongoing effort to expose the truth behind the war in Sudan and to build meaningful solidarity with the people resisting both military factions on the ground. They underline MENA Solidarity’s core message: the war in Sudan is not simply a battle between two armies, but a counter-revolutionary war waged by state militias, supported by imperialist powers, against a popular revolutionary movement fighting for freedom, justice, and dignity—and those determined to crush it.
