Khalid Sidahmed from MENA Solidarity recently participated in a three-part interview with Hudson Mohawk Magazine Radio, focusing on the complex and multifaceted war in Sudan. This series delves deep into the historical, geopolitical, and social dimensions of the Sudanese struggle, providing a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics at play – a crucial perspective often ignored by mainstream media narratives.
Below is a summary of each part, with links to listen to the interviews in full.
Part 1: How the Revolutions of the Past Shape Today’s War
The interview opens by delving into Sudan’s long history of military coups and revolutions. It explores how weak institutions left behind by colonialism and the dominance of the military fuelled instability. The legacy of past revolutions, however, continues to inspire the ongoing fight for a civilian-led government.
Part 2: How Foreign Influence is Perpetuating the War
Sudan’s rich resources, particularly gold, are transformed into pawns in the hands of regional and international powers. This segment exposes how countries like Russia, the UAE, Iran, and even the EU, US, and former colonizer UK all play a role in fuelling the conflict through military support and smuggled resources.
Part 3: The Effects of the War on Women and Children
This part honours the crucial role of Sudanese women in the revolution and the ongoing struggle. They are celebrated as “Kandakas” after the strong queens of the ancient Kushite kingdom, these women are the backbone of the resistance, providing medical aid, caring for families, and fighting for a better future. The war has had a devastating impact on education, with millions of children out of school. For girls, this increases the risk of child marriage and limited opportunities.
This interview is a call to action for peace and democracy in Sudan. Raise awareness by sharing information online, discussing the war with your friend and family, and contacting your local media. Support the Sudanese people by donating to humanitarian organisations or doctors’ unions working on the ground. Call on the British government to stop arms flowing from Britain’s allies among the regional powers stoking the conflict into the hands of the SAF and RSF.
MENA Solidarity would like to thank Hudson Mohawk Magazine Radio for allowing us to share the links to the interview series on our website. Their commitment to amplifying under-reported struggles is truly commendable.
