- This branch notes the devastation caused by the continuing war in Sudan between the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which erupted in April 2023 following the 2018 revolution. Civilians are paying the price for this struggle to control the country’s government and resources.
- This branch believes that foreign powers, including the British government, have contributed to this conflict by legitimising the two sets of generals through constant pressure on Sudanese civilian and democratic forces to negotiate power-sharing agreements with them. Furthermore, regional states allied to Britain, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Egypt and Israel have directly fuelled the conflict through providing military, financial and diplomatic support to the warring sides.
- This branch notes that Sudanese trade unions have been at the forefront of the movement for peace and democracy, opposing the October 2021 military coup and the war in Sudan, and sent their solidarity messages to striking workers in Britain.
- This branch calls for a lasting ceasefire, the provision of humanitarian aid by the British government and a ban on arms transfers to Sudan and regional powers involved in the conflict. We demand that the British government establishes safe, legal means for Sudanese citizens seeking asylum on the same basis as that offered to Ukrainians fleeing war. We send a message of solidarity to the Resistance Committees, trade unions, demand-based campaigns and revolutionary activists organising for a democratic, peaceful Sudan. We welcome their call for the demilitarisation of Sudanese cities and residential neighbourhoods.
- This branch resolves to work with MENA Solidarity Network, other trade unions, and Sudanese organisations working for peace and justice to:
- Host solidarity events on Sudan.
- Lobby parliamentarians.
- Publicise solidarity actions to members and invite Sudanese speakers to meetings – Affiliate to Middle East and North Africa Solidarity Network (https://menasolidaritynetwork.com/affiliate/) .
