Three activists arrested by the Sudanese Armed Forces are being “tortured daily”, according to Bahri Resistance Committees. Saddam Juma’a, Amer Abboud and Mujahid Anwar were arrested by Military Intelligence on 14 May and detained in ِAl-Dhakira military base in Al Kadaro, which is a building to store ammunition and weapons, and have been held without charge or trial.
Sudanese activists told Middle East Solidarity that the men’s families have received information from a reliable source that they are being tortured and their lives are in imminent danger. Dozens of other detainees are reportedly being held by the Sudanese military in similar conditions.
The arrests are happening in the context of a brutal war for control of the capital city which has seen both sides attacking civilians and crucial infrastructure.
Meanwhile Resistance Committees and other activist networks have stepped into the gap left by the state to try and ensure that ordinary people are able to access food, medicines and healthcare. In many areas they are operating “Emergency Rooms” which are coordinating basic services and organising repairs to damaged infrastructure. Many are continuing to agitate against the war since the fighting broke out in April by making public calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid, rejecting attempts to pull ordinary people into taking sides in the devastating conflict.
