Demonstrators gathered outside the Egyptian Embassy in London on 7 May to protest at the military’s crackdown on demonstrations at the Ministry of Defence in Cairo last week.

Student Jonas Liston said: “Seeing what’s going on Egypt we’ve been inspired by all those who fought back against the military dictatorship, all of those who’ve been detained fighting back. We’re trying to carry on the spirit of the struggle in fighting against the cuts, fighting against the privatisation of our universities, fighting against the trebling of tuition fees. Solidarity with the Egyptian struggle”.

Mark Campbell from the lecturers’ union UCU also sent a message of solidarity to the detainees.
