Voices of revolution: learning from women’s experiences in the struggle for change

This online event is hosted by Middle East North Africa Solidarity Network in collaboration with activists from Sudan, Iran, Palestine and elsewhere in the Middle East with the support of the National Education Union (NEU) and the Sudanese Women’s Union, UK. It will create a space for trade unionists and activists around the world to hear the voices of women who have been involved in leading and organising strikes, protests and campaigns fighting for liberation from oppression, democracy and social justice. Through discussion and debate we will address the following questions: 

• What can we learn from the popular movements in Iran, Sudan and Palestine about how resisting attacks on women’s rights can inspire uprisings for change? 
• How should activists deal with the problem that women often participate massively in popular uprisings but end up excluded or marginalised in negotiations over political reforms? 
• What role can strikes and workplace organising play in creating conditions for women’s liberation and an end to oppression based on gender identity?

Speakers include: 

• From Sudan: A feminist activist and representative of No to Women’s Oppression and Gamareia Omar of the Sudanese Teachers’ Committee
• From Iran: La’ya Hooshyari (Socialist feminist activist and PhD student in education at the University of Manchester) 
• From Palestine: Manal Tamini (leading activist in the struggle by villagers in Nabi Saleh against Israeli occupation) 
• From Saudi Arabia: Lina Alhathloul (head of Monitoring and Advocacy, ALQST for human rights)

The meeting will be in English and Arabic with interpretation for speakers and participants both spoken and via the zoom chat.

اللقاء بغرض خلق مساحة للنقابيين و الفاعلين في جميع أنحاء العالم لسماع أصوات النساء اللاتي يشاركن في قيادة وتنظيم الإضرابات والاحتجاجات والحملات التي تناضل من أجل الديمقراطية والعدالة الاجتماعية و التحرر من الاضطهاد

:من خلال المناقشة و تبادل الاراء، سنتناول الأسئلة التالية

بالاستناد على تجربة الحراك الشعبي في إيران والسودان، في مجال مقاومة التعدي على حقوق المرأة، كيف يمكننا الإشتغال على تعزيز العمل المقاوم من أجل التغيير؟

ما الذي يجب عمله من قبل الفاعلين و المهتمين، لضمان عدم إستبعاد وتهميش النساء عند إجراء مفاوضات حول الإصلاح السياسي، بالرغم من مشاركتهن القوية والفعالة في مرحلة الانتفاض والمواجهة مع الدكتاتوريات؟

ما هو الدور المنوط بالوقفات والإضرابات التي تنظم في أماكن العمل، في العمل على دعم وتحقيق تحرير المرأة وإنهاء الاضطهاد القائم على الهوية الجنسية؟
