Egypt: Doctors debate next steps after successful strike

Doctors marched through the streets of Cairo on Sunday 29 May, demanding the resignation of the Minister of Health, in a protest called to keep the pressure on the government following their national strike on 17 May.

The Doctors’ Higher Strike Committee met with representatives of the regional strike committees and issued a statement confirming that the strike remains suspended until the Doctors’ Union general assembly meets on 10 June to debate whether to accept proposals for revision of the doctors’ pay framework currently being negotiated with the government.

The statement also announced  a further demonstration, when doctors will march from their general assembly to Tahrir Square on 10 June, and called on health workers across Egypt to join new independent unions which will unite all employees in the health service, a model pioneered by staff at Manshiyet al-Bakri hospital in Cairo.
